Poor Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) can cause allergies, headaches, coughs, asthma triggers, skin irritations and other breathing difficulties, as well as cancer, liver disease, kidney damage and nervous-system failure.(2)

Newer structures are more air tight (weatherized) and have the potential to hold in air pollutants.  The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) warns, "consequently, after weatherization, concentrations of indoor air pollutants from sources inside the home can increase.”(3) 

An ERV is connected into your central air conditioner and heater duct work and is continually changing out ALL the air in the home or building with 100% fresh, clean, pure air from outdoors and pushing the contaminated stale air back outside.  

Portable room-size units filter stale, recycled air in one room.  Filters must be maintained and/or replaced consistently to be effective.  Portable air filters can be effective only for the room size listed in the manufacturers recommendations.  

Typically, multiple portable air filters are required for a home so air from one room doesn't contaminate air in the next room. This can be a lot of maintenance depending on the number of units and individual filters can be pricey to replace.

In a study done in a lab at Harvard and Berkeley, they found “statistically significant and meaningful reductions in decision-making performance” at CO2 levels found in typical indoor locations such as homes, schools and offices.(4)

 The study concludes that we must "keep inside levels [of CO2] as close as possible to levels outdoors through greater use of outside air."(4) 

Sick building syndrome (SBS) is a condition named for illness attributed to poor indoor air quality that's thought to be caused by being inside a building or enclosed space.  The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) also has extensive information on indoor air quality pollutants in buildings and homes.(5)
